Bill would expand Okla. sales tax holiday

OKLAHOMA CITY – Legislation filed by state Rep. Pat Ownbey would expand Oklahoma’s sales tax holiday to include school supplies that cost less than $100 and computers that cost less than $1,000.

According to Rep. Ownbey's office, the sales tax holiday, which takes place beginning at 12:01 a.m. on the first Friday in August and ending at midnight on the following Sunday currently only includes articles of clothing.

Ownbey said in a press release Monday, "House Bill 1460 defines school supplies as “pens, pencils, three-ring binders, notebook paper, spiral notebooks, pocket folders, rulers, protractors, compasses, map pencils, crayons, markers, glue, index cards or any item included on an official supply list provided to students by the State Department of Education.”

The legislation defines a computer as a “tablet, laptop, desktop, or tower computer system which consists of a central processing unit (CPU), and may include devices such as a display monitor, keyboard, mouse, and speakers sold as a computer package.”

If enacted, House Bill 1460 would take effect July 1, 2013.
