DENISON, TEXAS -- Construction workers at three Denison elementary schools are in the final stretch. School starts in just one month!

"And we have been assured that the facilities will be ready," Hyde Park Elementary School Principal Regina Prigge said.

This summer, crews have been renovating...

"Mayes Elementary, Lamar Elementary and Hyde Park Elementary," Denison ISD Assistant Superintendent Lee McNair said.

These are some of the new areas the students will see when the schools open their doors again on August 27th.

In total, the three schools are getting 24 new classrooms. They each get new offices and kitchens, along with other upgrades.

"Part of it is to anticipate future growth," McNair said.

The other reasons they're doing construction: maintenance and security.

"For the first time, all of Hyde Park will be totally enclosed. All the classroom doors will be interior doors. Raises the level of safety for our students and our teachers on our campus," Prigge said.

This construction is part of a larger project, paid for by bonds.

"The amount of the bond issue was $79.75 million," McNair said.

With the bonds, the district is also paying for the new Denison High School, which they say is needed because the current high school...

"Has become extremely overcrowded. There was no additional land where the current high school is located to expand," McNair said.

The new high school that will be ready for the 2014-2015 school year will be able to grow along with the growth of the city.

"We could increase the size of the high school in the future to accommodate 1,800 students," McNair said.

Prigge says she's excited about the renovations to her school.

"We are extremely thankful to the voters and the patrons in Denison, Texas who passed the bond election that made all of this construction possible," Prigge said.

Along with the new Denison high school, more big changes will come for the 2014-2015 school year.

The current high school will become the middle school and the current middle school will become an intermediate school for 5th and 6th grades.
