(BONHAM, TEXAS) -- Many older Bonham homes are dilapidated creating dangerous living conditions for the owners but a lot of them can't afford the renovations...that's why the city has applied for the HOME program grant for the past 10 years.
The federal grant originates through HUD and goes through state and local levels -- allowing homeowners to rebuild at no cost to them.
Charles Edwards, " there is a dollar threshold that the Texas Dept of Housing and Community affairs puts forth..currently its at $40,000 and each portion of the home must be brought up to today's construction standards."
Amanda Wright says her home in Bonham was unlivable when she applied for the program, she is extremely grateful for the new home for her and her two boys.
" I cried..I couldn't believe that this was actually my house..being a single mom I thought I would never be able to have a house that's really this nice," she says.
Residents can even choose their own floor plans, cabinets and appliance colors.
Wright says she is forever thankful her city offers this program," it's been a blessing that the city of Bonham..or the state...is allowing the city of Bonham to build these houses for people that are in really bad conditions."
Bonham residents interested in the Home program can pick up an application at city hall. To be eligible you must be a Bonham resident, own your home and be willing to relocate during rebuilding.
The program has already completed 19 Bonham homes.
