BONHAM, TX - Bonham was host to a battle Tuesday afternoon as the police and fire departments duked it out for blood donations. Victoria Maranan was at the 6th annual "Battle of the Badges" blood drive Tuesday, and it's not over yet.
We just heard from the blood center more than 114 people came out to give blood Tuesday in honor of their favorite department. But the winner of this friendly competition won't be announced until Wednesday morning's trophy presentation.
"I'm here to donate blood for victims that are possibly in any kind of accident or incident that possibly need blood," said former volunteer firefighter Rick Lingelbach.
He hit the one gallon milestone today as he gave blood in support of the Bonham Fire Department. He is one of more than a hundred people who showed up at the Fannin County Courthouse and Bonham City Hall to take part in the "Battle of the Badges."
Texoma Regional Blood Center's DeeDee Morehead said people have been stopping by all day signing up to donate and once they are done, they get a "Battle of the Badges" t-shirt. She said monitoring the votes gave her an idea of how the competition is going.
"I think it's been pretty close. Because you know, they put their votes into this box and I really don't get to see it but as they're writing it, I kind of peek over and I've seen police, fire, police fire, you know," she said.
If you missed today's "Battle of the Badges," there will be another one June in Sherman. The Bonham Fire Department won "Battle of the Badges" last year.
