Choctaw County grass fire claims 40 acres

CHOCTAW COUNTY, OK -- Fire Officials say a fire that destroyed over 40 acres was completely extinguished around 6 this evening.

Around noon the Hugo Fire Department and several local volunteer departments responded to the fire about three miles west of Hugo on Highway 70.

The blaze burned two barns, but firefighters were able to save two homes.

Officials say the fire rekindled a second time before they were able to completely put it out.

Hugo Fire Chief Ron Cloud says strong winds pushed the fire in multiple directions, causing problems for the firefighters.

"We think the fire started from the hay baler." said Cloud. "The fire and burned 40 to 50 acres here and about 60 bales of hay." Ron Cloud

Nobody was hurt and no animals were being held in the barns.
