DURANT, OK - From small beginnings to a huge operation, the Choctaw Recycling Center has gone above and beyond to make their nation green. KXII talked to the project manager who says they owe their success to the community.

This is just some of the 140-thousand pounds the Choctaw Nation's recycling center brings in every month!

Director of Project Management Tracy Horst says that's more than a one-thousand percent increase from when they started the project four years ago.

"We've been fortunate to get the employees involved," said Horst. "Once the employees are involved, we've gotten all our tribal members involved so there's a lot of residential recycling. In the last six months we've gone to businesses in Durant and we've gotten them involved."

What many don't realize, is every single piece has to be sorted by hand, but that doesn't slow down this bunch.

Horst says that this particular group of bales probably equals out to about 40 thousand pounds and that's just shredded paper. To give you and idea of how hard these guys work they ship one of these out about every two weeks.

Fortunately we've got some great employees that have been able to keep up with that," said Horst. "The shelter workshop here in Durant also comes over and they help us sort through things. They're usually here two or three days a week."

And although they barely break even with government funding and material sales, Horst says they don't do it for green...they do it to be green.

You want to make sure that what you leave to your kids, grandkids, nieces, and nephews makes the world a better place and this is one of those things," she said.

They plan to continue to add new locations.
