ATOKA, OK-It's a dream come true for Atoka Public Schools as they laid the last brick for the new Atoka Elementary School a few weeks ago. Thursday, the community got their first glimpse of the new facility.

Leann Wyrick was one of dozens of parents who walked into the new Atoka Elementary School for the first time Thursday and she was impressed with what she saw.

"My son is excited to see the colors, it's very welcoming. I think it will really add to kids being excited for school," she said.

Thursday, a ribbon cutting was held to celebrate the new school, inviting the community to take a look inside.

Atoka school officials have been dreaming of building a new elementary school in the past five years and they said if it wasn't for the help of the community, the $9.8 million facility wouldn't be possible.

"It feels good you know, when you know the community's behind you on a project like this because you know, this is not just our project, this is the community's."

School Board President, Cochran said voters passed the $9.8 million bond in 2011 to build the new school. He said the deteriorating old building posed health and safety concerns for students.

The new school is designed to be energy efficient. Security features like double doors and 28 cameras set up all over the school will keep kids safer.

"I feel better about my kid going to a school that is more secure. All the security features here are great and I know these parents, that's one of the things they'll be looking for when they bring their kid in," Wyrick said.

State Rep. Charles McCall was also on hand to see where his youngest son will learn this fall.

"It speaks volumes from this community and the investment this community it made for its vision for the future," he said.

The first day of school is next Thursday, August 15th.

The old Atoka Elementary School will be demolished this fall.
