SOUTHMAYD, TX - An enormous grass fire burned more than a thousand acres in west Grayson County this afternoon.
Firefighters are calling it one of the biggest wildfires in the county so far this season. It ignited around 12:30 this afternoon near the intersection of U.S. Highway 82 and Gage Road. Plumes of smoke could be seen for miles
The Grayson County Wild Land Task Force was activated to help battle the blaze. More than 15 fire departments have responded
We are just now hearing that a helicopter has been called in from Mount Pleasant for air support.
"We're battling the high temperatures, so the guys are really taking a beating out there. The fire is moving pretty quick. It's generating some of its own weather, so we're fighting it jumping the roads and actually moving in several different directions at one time," Sherman Fire Chief Jeff Jones says.
