DENISON, TX -- Residents could soon be seeing faster response times as the police department adds two additional officer positions to their ranks.

The department added four new officers total - two officers will fill vacant positions.

"As we talk about here the journey to greatness, we think these are the type people that fit that profile for us and will fit that profile and serve our community as best they can," said Police Chief Jay Burch.

The two new positions were created by the city council earlier this year.

"Yes, the department is growing, but just the calls for service we have, the number of type calls, getting the number on the street that we need to have in this size community," Burch said.

Burch said one thing he's focused on during his two years as chief has been diversity - which is why they've added two female officers to the force.

"We want to be reflective of our community. And having an all-male police force doesn't do that," he said.

Burch is not sure why they haven't been able to recruit female officers in the past.

"Whether it's our old facilities, or if it's as someone mentioned, a cultural change in the past, I don't know," he said.

And the officers - they look forward to ushering in a new era.

"It is slightly daunting," Officer Victoria Giovanniello said. "I hope that the department doesn't think they have to change anything because they're female officers coming in. We're all co-workers, we're all policemen."

"I just really hope to be able to recruit some more females for the department, and to be able to show the community that they are great female officers out there," Officer Holly Jenkins said.

Burch said he hopes this is the first step to an even more diverse force in the future.

"Our goal is to be the best police department, not only in this region but in the state. and getting the right people in here is what helps us do that," he said.
