ARDMORE, OK - Oklahoma Highway Patrol said they recovered the body of a Stephens County man this morning, who drowned while swimming with friends on Lake Murray.
Troopers said 31-year-old Kenneth Thomas of Duncan was swimming near Tipps Point on Lake Murray with nearly thirty people when he went missing around 11:30 a.m. Sunday.
"He was asked to go get something, I think it was a cigarette for somebody" Trooper Mike Groeber said.
Lake Murray officials said Thomas was unaccounted for for about twenty minutes.
"Somebody stepped on what they thought was a body, and it was him," Groeber said. "They had no idea that he had drowned."
Groeber said friends pulled Thomas from the water and a near by nurse attempted CPR on him until emergency personal arrived on scene.
Thomas was pronounced dead at Mercy Hospital in Ardmore.
Groeber said Thomas did have a medical history of seizures, which may have played a role in the drowning.
He said he does not believe alcohol was a factor.
"I smelled no alcohol on him when we were working on him," Groeber said. "There was some indication he had been drinking yesterday but not today."
