DENISON, TX -- It was a dreary day for most of Texoma Tuesday. But it didn't affect the mood in Denison.
"The excitement affiliated with it is just awesome," said Donna Dow, Main Street director.
That's because 11 new businesses plan to open downtown. Dow said they're bringing in variety - which is what downtown needs.
"It's remarkable that we have all of them coming in at once," she said.
For years, downtown Denison has been plagued by empty store fronts. That's why city officials have started a new campaign to fill the spots and bring new life to downtown.
"It's a little disheartening to see so many empty buildings," she said.
Andrew Popplewell owns Bluemoon Antiques on Main Street. He said he's hopeful to see downtown experiencing a re-vival.
"As close to booming as it has been in the last few years," he said.
And he's not just excited about his business life.
"I'm really excited to have more food in the area, because we live upstairs, so we actually live on Main Street," he said.
BG Treasures is the first of the new businesses to open up.
"More people I think will be coming into town," said Willis Brock, with BG Treasures.
Brock said being part of a new batch of businesses will help him gain customers.
"If they come to another business, they might see this one and come over here too," he said.
Dow said the new businesses are all part of a larger effort by Denison Main Street.
"It doesn't completely erase all of our vacancies downtown, but it sure is a shot in the arm," Dow said.
