GAINESVILLE, TX -- One Texoma police department is taking advantage of today's technology to fight crime.

Gainesville dispatchers and police officers can now keep an eye on parts of the city without even being there, all thanks to security cameras.

"We were looking for a way to help protect different parts of town," Cpt. Mark Brazelton said.

Gainesville police Captain Mark Brazelton says the department set aside about $12,000 for the installation of these cameras around town.
They're wireless, and they tilt, pan and zoom on their own to capture many angles.

So far, police have put the cameras in five locations around the city -- one of those being this downtown area. And business owners we spoke with say they're pleased.

"I really think it's going to benefit the downtown area and just add security to all the merchants downtown and also the employees and the courthouse," Sole'renity Day Spa owner Rhonda Modecai said.

"I think it's an awesome idea. Because we actually have had several, not particularly my shop yet, but the shops up and down the neighborhood and even down California Street have had their glass broken and items stolen out of there," Anana's owner Randy Harper said.

Captain Brazelton says it's those crimes that prompted the idea.

"And that type of crime, you really have to be at the right place at the right time to be able to catch somebody doing that. And there's not a lot of evidence that leads us to a person who may have done that," he said.

He says now they'll be able to review video for suspect and vehicle descriptions -- evidence that can help solve crimes. But not only will they be able to access recorded video, if a call comes in from one of the areas with surveillance, officers can pull up the live image to see what's happening while they're heading to the scene.

They are in the testing phase, but plan to install more cameras around the city.
