Gainesville announces proclamation against domestic violence

GAINESVIILE, TX - According to the Texas Council on Family Violence, there were nearly 189,000 family violence incidents in Texas in 2012.

Tuesday night the Gainesville City Council joined a local shelter to raise awareness of domestic violence to hopefully help bring those numbers down.

The Gainesville City Council joined representatives of Abigail's Arms to proclaim June as Domestic Violence Awareness Month.

Abigial's Arms officials said it's a crime that occurs all too often and is often overlooked.

They hope this proclamation will shine some light on the issue and encourage victims of domestic violence to get help.

Kim Cook, Executive Director of Abigial's Arms, said domestic abuse is a huge problem, but the county is making progress in the fight.

"One of the main things that we saw is last year, because of the awareness efforts, our new client intake increased by 20 people. That was pretty amazing for us because that let us know our job was effective," said Cook.

Abigial's Arms and the city of Gainesville is using the month of June to raise awareness all month long about domestic violence.

The organization is holding a month long campaign called "30 for 30." Thirty events in 30 days around Cooke County, to help fight and raise awareness to violence in the home.

"We will be tying 114 purple ribbons along the fence lines at the railroad track and that is to signify 114 lives that were lost due to domestic violence in the state of Texas in 2013," said Cook.

They kicked off the campaign by accepting families into the new Cooke County Family Crisis Center. The first of its kind in the county.

Mayor Pro Tem Ray Nichols said protecting victims and fighting family violence is a community effort.

"We want our community to take this proclamation and make it part of their everyday lives, thinking about these programs and making everybody else aware. The more awareness we have the less domestic violence we'll have," said Nichols.
