SHERMAN, TX -- Right now its estimated that only 7% of people with diabetes are maintaining their recommended glucose and cholesterol levels so taking a class on how to properly manage these levels can be beneficial.

With the increase in American waist sizes, comes the increased risk of type 2 diabetes. Right now an estimated 79 million Americans are prediabetic.

Failure to monitor blood glucose levels, cholesterol and blood pressure can lead to more health risks and even more hospital bills. It's a domino effect that Director of Education and Professional Development and Patient Care Operations at Texas Health WNJ Lenora Hatch says can be stopped with prevention.

"Exercise, decreasing weight and then watching the amount of fats that are consumed certainly helps prevent Type 2 diabetes or the progression of needing additional medications," said Hatch.

Still with 26 million Americans already diabetic, prevention may not be an option. That's why Grayson County offices like the AgriLife Extension Agency offer skills to those struggling with the disease.

The "Do Well, Be Well with Diabetes" program is geared toward those with type 2 diabetes. Grayson County Agrilife Extension Agent Joyce White says, diabetes is manageable even though it can be frustrating at times.

"It is overwhelming," says White. "It's overwhelming to go eat out and look at a menu and what can I have'. So we're going to take them through a lot of those different steps and let them know what's available to them and hopefully have experts here to answer those questions and that's a big part of it."

The five week program offers tips like how to properly check your blood glucose levels to manage diabetes. As well as topics on diet and exercise to prevent further health problems. Classes start tonight from 6-9 p.m. on the 2nd floor of the Grayson County Courthouse. The cost is $30 per person for the entire five weeks.
