ARDMORE, OK -- Stores were busy Monday with people spending their newly received gift cards, but also making returns and exchanges for gifts they weren't crazy about. Kristen Shanahan visited with local retailers to ask them what customers can do to make gift exchanges And returns easier for everyone.
According to the National Retail Federation last year retailers say they lost about $3.7 billion dollars due to return fraud. Retailers realize gifts do not always work out, but say there are things you can do to make the return process easier on both ends.
Roger Wood says he got the House Slippers he wanted for Christmas, but not in the right size. That is why he says he did not waste much time to make sure he found the perfect fit.
"That's why why I came at this time of day. So I thought I'd beat the crowd that came earlier in the morning to exchange things," Woods said.
Woods says he was shocked at how fast the exchange process was, but store managers like Terry Anderson at the JCPenny in Ardmore says the operation behind the register takes a lot less time when you save your receipt like Woods did.
"Obviously if they keep their receipts that's always the easiest, but we have processes through our register where we can look up a receipt," Anderson said.
Store managers say they know people often times do not keep up with their receipts, but say if people at least keep the tags attached they have something to work with and it reassures them it is their merchandise.
"I know personally I don't keep all the receipts," Buckle Store Manager in Ardmore Toni McBride said. "I may not make it in the time frame. So we make it easy as possible, but when the tags are on there there's no problem. We want the guest to be happy with whatever it is that they want."
McBride says it is not only returns and exchanges that keeps them busy the day after Christmas. She says tons of people come in to redeem their gift cards. Usually she says her employees can help the customer find something they want, but if not they can always save their card until new items come in.
"You might want to maybe hold on to those because then again you can get some of the new things that are coming in," McBride said.
For gift card shoppers, if you cannot find something to your liking fellow shoppers say they have some good advice.
"If I get a gift card from a place I don't like then I can give it to somebody that does shop there," Woods said.
"There's always somebody that will find something. You can always re-gift," shopper Virgil Perryman said.
Also, for those of you who received gift cards but do not plan on using them there are websites you can go to where you can exchange your gift card.
Some sites you can visit are PlasticJungle.com, Cardpool.com, and GiftCardRescue.com
