Infant deaths could have been avoided

SHERMAN, TX-- Sherman police said they're concerned about the number of infant deaths, in the city, over the past two years. Deaths they said that could have been prevented.

Five babies have died in Sherman since 2010, two of those happened this year.

Police said babies can easily suffocate on couch cushions or get trapped between a crib railing and a mattress.

To help prevent these deaths, the Pregnancy Care Center in Sherman, offers parenting classes for mothers and fathers. 2,000 parents took part in the program last year and police say educating new parents could save babies' lives.

"They were deaths that were a result of suffocation that were not so much negligence as it was of inexperience," said, Sherman Police, Sgt. Bruce Dawsey.
