Intoxication assault charge to be filed against Callisburg ISD bus driver

CALLISBURG, TX -- Texas DPS says it will file a charge of Intoxication Assault against the Callisburg ISD bus driver who crashed into a tree last week injuring several students on the bus.

News 12 spoke to one of those students who tells us about, what she calls, a horrifying experience.

"I felt my life flash before my eyes," Kimberly said.

Kimberly, who asked not to be identified, was on the Calisburg ISD school bus that crashed on County Road 219 just after 7:00 Thursday morning.

"All of a sudden we just went off the road and it was so fast, but it all happened in slow motion," Kimberly said. "When the bus was going off the road and when I looked up the bus driver his head was down, but I don't know what had happened to him. I don't know if he just feel asleep."

The 18-year-old says after the bus side swiped a few trees the driver came to and pulled back onto the roadway and continued driving.

"We stopped at the next kids house to pick them up for school and that's when we all rushed off the bus," Kimberly said.

Troopers say a 13-year-old was taken to the hospital by EMS and four others, including Kimberly, were taken to a local hospital by family -- all with non-life threatening injuries.

"I only had a minor concussion and whiplash," Kimberly said.

Texas DPS says the bus driver 83-year-old James Floyd also went to the hospital. Troopers say the Intoxication Assault charge comes after his records revealed he was intoxicated at the time of the crash.

At this time Callisburg Superintendent Steve Clugston says Floyd has been placed on leave. He says once the school district receives a report from DPS it will take "whatever action is appropriate". Clugston adds that all the district's bus drivers are randomly drug tested on a routine basis.

Kimberly says she's just glad everyone is okay.

"God was definitely with us when that happened," Kimberly said.
