Investigation halted on US 75 hay bale fire

SHERMAN, TX -- Last Sunday, a trailer driving southbound on US highway 75, carrying over 50 barrels of hay, caught fire and sparked a large grass fire near Taylor road.

Investigators say, the witness who claimed to have seen someone flick a cigarette into the hay bale has withdrawn the statement.

Surveillance footage from a nearby gas station has not been recovered.

Fire Marshal Nathan Huffman says, without witnesses or video it will be difficult to determine the cause of the fire.

"The hay was a total loss. It was completely burned up. Any evidence would have been burned up or lost being something that small and something organic combustible materials it makes it very difficult to try to find the ignition source," said Huffman.

If you have any information, you're urged to call the Sherman Fire Department at 903-957-FIRE.
