BONHAM, TX--- Local residents are giving heaters to those in need.

Several of the surrounding counties in Texoma have 13 to 26 percent of residents under poverty. Those numbers make it difficult for residents to keep up with basic needs like heating a home, but some Texomans may have a little help this year.

The Bonham Police Department and the Fannin County Crisis Center are putting on a heater drive to give to those in need in Fannin County and the surrounding areas.

Residents can drop off new or used heaters at both locations.

The drive has been going on for 6 to 7 years. The Crisis Center also accepts other donations including canned goods, books, movies and clothes.

Last year they gave out close to 125 heaters.

Chief Mike Bankston of the Bonham Police Department says those who receive the heaters are extremely grateful.

"90% of the people, they are just extremely appreciative that they're going to have a little something to put some heat into their house, especially with the kids, the younger kids." said Bankston.

The drive will last through the holidays until after New Years. They are asking you drop off portable heaters or heaters that can be plugged into the wall.
