SHERMAN, TX -- A local restaurant is joining forces with a non-profit youth organization for an upcoming event. For this Mom's Everyday Family Fun segment, we'll tell you how you and your family can get involved in this special luncheon.
Virginia Brooks found joy in being a big sister to Miguel last year. "I'd forgotten how much fun it is to have a friend that's eight years old so Miguel and I have done some wonderful things together, we've gone out to parks and movies," said Virginia. "I found out how it felt to be young again!"
For a whole year Virginia looked forward to their weekly visits as part of the Big Brothers Big Sisters program of Grayson County. The nonprofit's regional chapter has been placing caring adults with kids in one-on-one mentoring relationships since 1996.
Although this agency is a nonprofit, its volunteer youth mentoring program is supported by donors. That's why Big Brothers Big Sisters holds informational events like the "Big Picture Luncheon".
The next event will be held Thursday, September 6th at Texas Roadhouse in Sherman where you can enjoy a free meal, meet new people and gain a "big picture" understanding of how you can help.
Big Brothers and Big Sisters of Grayson Community Recruiter, C.J. Jenkins says Big Brother volunteers are especially in high demand.
"Traditionally it's the man that runs (or) leads the household," said C.J. "So, we need people to step up and help these young men become leaders in our community."
The encouragement kids get from their mentor, is designed to help kids see their potential and build their futures. The nonprofit cites that kids in the program are more likely to graduate and are less likely to begin using drugs or alcohol.
But for Virginia, the biggest gift is being a Big Sister. "It's the most rewarding thing I've ever done, seriously," she said. "He's become a really great friend."
The Big Picture Luncheon will be at the Texas Roadhouse in Sherman on Thursday, September 6th. Food service starts at 11:40 am, the program begins at noon and will end promptly at 1:00 pm.
