GRAYSON COUNTY, TX -- Oklahomans saved an estimated $6.9 million over tax-free weekend. Now it's Texas' turn. This Friday through Sunday is tax-free weekend for Texas.

Shoppers can save on clothes and shoes under $100. Here in Texas, shoppers can save on school supplies and back packs, something Oklahoma didn't offer.

Now, local store owners are gearing up for the crowds and Denison is even hosting a new event to draw shoppers downtown.

The three-day, tax-free holiday starts Friday in Texas, and The Shops on Travis owner, Jonathan Hitchcock, said shoppers aren't the only ones excited.

"We do have a big rush, as a lot of retailers do, just because people are trying to take advantage of, you know because it's back to school as well as tax-free weekend. You know, there's a lot of shoppers out there," said Hitchcock.

Store owners are taking tax-free weekend as an opportunity to encourage shopping local.

On Saturday the city of Denison is hosting a "Back to School Beach Party."

Downtown shops will stay open till 6 p.m. There will be a concert by a Jimmy Buffett tribute band, and some perks for school teachers who come out to shop.

"When you go around the stores, as you're shopping you'll get tickets to be entered for prizes. And teachers that have their i.d.'s will get kind of extra tickets and extra incentives," said Shine on Main store owner, Sarah Oro.

Teachers will also get 10 percent off their purchase at Shine on Main.

Sherman store owners hope for the same crowds.

"There's good retail down here that people don't know about," said store owner Naif Risk.

Risk Shoe Store owner, Naif Risk, hopes local stores aren't overshadowed by big businesses.

"We have a little bit different atmosphere downtown. It's not as hustle bustle. Saturdays are great days downtown. Fridays are good too, but Saturdays there's easy parking downtown," said Risk.

Texas Comptroller, Susan Combs, predicts shoppers will save $64.8 million in state and local sales taxes this weekend. So, many businesses will see a boost in customers.

"It's a good thing that the state offers for tax free, and I think it's a win win for everyone," said Hitchcock.
