ARDMORE, OK--Thanks to Ardmore Residents shopping locally for Christmas this year many people looking for jobs may get a big gift as well.
The recent success of local retail businesses have strengthened Ardmore's economyand that means more jobs for those who need work. Ardmore business owners say after the holiday rush they are finishing the year out strong and are already getting ready for the next holiday.
"Valentine's day just came in last week and we haven't got it out yet. It is never a dull moment in retail" said Fernando.
Sue Fernando owns The Brown Paper Bag, and says business is so good she plans to hire more employees in 2012 and she is not alone. Brien Thorstenberg with the Ardmore chamber of commerce says recent retail sales in Ardmore have been up seven percent since last year and Ardmore's Economy is booming.
"The unemployment rate is well below the state national average, we're at a 5 % unemployment rate, the state of Oklahoma is 6% and nationally is 9% so things are looking well" said Thorstenberg.
"We are in a place where the economy is still trudging right along a lot better than a lot of other places" said Fernando.
Fernando Credits the community for the success of her business and others in Ardmore. Thorstenberg said it is not just retail that's proving successful in the city. Ardmore's location brings a variety of other job opportunities.
"Strong economy here in terms of our location to Dallas and Oklahoma City puts us in a very good location for manufacturing and distribution centers we have a very strong oil and gas industry here" said Thorstenberg.
