SHERMAN, TX - Senior hunger is a growing problem across Texoma, so today, local officials joined Meals on Wheels to feed those in need in our community.
Texoma Meals on Wheels says that knock on the door is often times the only interaction these seniors get all week and it's a knock, Jacel Lewis always looks forward to.
"I just am thrilled by everyone who comes to the door, we talk once in a while and I'm not sure that's the best thing to do for the people on down the way, they're hungry." said Jacel Lewis.
Hundreds of seniors like Lewis, depend on that delivery from Meals on Wheels.
"It's a lot more than just food, it's a connection of people, it's a chance to discuss, to have a conversation with someone and I think it's a big part of their lives." said Bill Magers.
Sherman Mayor Bill Magers says he looks forward to Mayors for Meals, and he even gets his sons involved.
"It's fun just going out and seeing people smile when they get their food." said Zachary Magers.
"To see my boys faces when they're able to help someone, it's something money can't buy." Mayor Magers said.
Manager, Sandra Shephard, says Mayors for Meals day is an annual event held across the nation to bring focus to the growing problem of senior hunger.
"Well it gets them to experience first hand the senior hunger that is spreading at a wild pace in this community." said Shephard.
Grayson County Clerk, Wilma Bush, says when she heard about this event, she jumped at the chance to be a first time volunteer.
"I think it's very important to raise the level of awareness so that we can end senior hunger, and anytime we can get that message out and get others involved I think it's a very important thing." said Bush.
Shephard says on average Meals on Wheels in Sherman delivers about 300 meals a day.
Magers says it's simple thing to do, and he's happy to be involved.
"Meals on Wheels helps so many people that would not get a meal otherwise, and it's about the most basic form of charity that you can do, is to feed somebody." Magers said.
Texoma Meals on Wheels says they always need volunteers.
