New North Lamar program hopes to inspire new generation of teachers

PARIS, TX -- One local high school will offer a new class next school year for students interested in a career in the classroom.

"Ready, Set, Teach" will begin its inaugural campaign at North Lamar High School this fall. The program is designed for students who see their futures in teaching, coaching or working with children, giving those students a head start on their careers.

"We're hoping this will open their eyes and they'll understand more of what it's going to be to be a real teacher," said North Lamar teacher Frankie Jarrell.

Students will learn the history of education, as well as intern and work with mentor teachers at Higgins and Everett Elementaries.

"They're going to see a slice of life in the life of a teacher," said Jarrell.

"For someone interested in being a teacher they should do it," said sophomore Emily Gibson.

While the program is new to North Lamar, "Ready, Set, Teach" has been around for nearly a decade in schools across the nation.

"Once we get our feet wet and get the program going, we'd like to go into third, fourth and fifth and eventually into the middle school, sixth, seventh and eighth grade," said Jarrell.

Students have the opportunity to participate in RST! for two full years earning school credit, but no salary. At the end of their senior year, RST! student interns may apply for a letter of intent from North Lamar ISD.

Gibson says the experience will help in her future.

"When you apply to be a teacher, the more experience you have the better chances you have of getting the job," said Gibson.

"In this day in time, if there is 50 people trying for the same job, that gives them one leg up on everyone else," said Jarrell.
