BONHAM, TX - Statistics show one out of every 3 girls and one out of every 5 boys is sexually abused by the time they are 18 years old. One Fannin County woman, a victim herself, has been living with the emotional scars all her life and she's now using that experience to help other victims in the community.
Fannin County Case worker Sandy Hood is a survivor of childhood sexual abuse.
"I'm 54-years-old and I still have to deal with the residuals of what happened to me as a child," said Hood.
According to the Child Advocacy Center there are more than 42 million adult survivors of childhood sexual abuse living in the U.S. In Texoma, support groups for these survivors can be hard to find, but Hood hopes to change that.
"It was just laying on my heart," she said. "For about a year now I've been wanting to start a group like this and it just became the right time and the right avenues."
It's called the Courage Group, and it starts Tuesday April 3rd, at 6pm, at the Fannin County Children's center. It's open to all women, over the age of 18 who were sexually abused as children.
"Women need to stand up for themselves and know that there is a support group out there," said survivor Robin Price. "There is a support for everyday things."
Hood says this isn't intended to be a therapy group, but hopes the support offered will help victims of abuse move on with their lives.
"The emphasis on this group is going to be on hope healing a thriving. Thriving in areas of your life."
