ARDMORE, OK - Starting this August, an A through F system will be used to grade the annual performance of each district.
State Superintendent Janet Baressi has been pushing for the system since last year.
The state school board still has to approve new guidelines.
Despite a backlash from local school administrators around the state, the Oklahoma State Department of Education says parents and taxpayers have a right to know how their schools are performing.
"In other states where this reform has passed, what we have seen is schools that get a lower grade, the community and the parents rally around that school and say what can we do to help the school improve," Damon Gardenhire said. "So this isn't about being punitive, it's about improving."
