PARIS, TX -- School districts nationwide are boosting up security, including Paris ISD, due to school shootings like Newtown.
Monday afternoon the city council approved a law enforcement agreement between the city police department and Paris ISD, giving the school district jurisdiction over the area within it's boundaries.
The new Safety and Security Department will be made up of six former police officers that will help reassure the safety of students.
"We wanted to have an armed police officer on every campus within the district and we just felt like the best way to go about that would be to have our own department." said new Safety and Security Director Brad Ruthart.
Officers will be sworn in immediately following the department's certification from the Texas Commission on Law Enforcement Officer Standards and Education.
