DENISON, TEXAS -- Denison's Main Street could be getting the latest trend in parks.

"The pocket park is kinda sorta a whole new thing," Denison City Manager Robert Hanna said.

Denison is looking into getting a pocket park: an outdoor park, tucked behind the façade of a downtown building.

"What we're talking about doing is keeping the facades up as kind of an entry way, but the inside would be transformed dramatically into one of three types of environments," Hanna said.

The pocket park is a two-part solution for the city: the construction would reinforce and refurbish the old building's beams and walls and would give residents a new hang-out spot for family and friends.

"You could sit there and maybe have brunch in the afternoon, or you could sit there and maybe have a concert in the spring," Hanna said.

There are three different concepts for the 7,000 square foot space: a garden pass through, an industrial-contemporary park, or an entertainment space with a stage for concerts.

"It's going to be a really cool setting," Hanna said.

Some local residents say it sounds like a "big city" idea, but they think it's a great one.

"I think it's a great idea. It would give kids more places to go and stay out of trouble," Whitewright resident Elease Tolley said.

The buildings that would house the park were donated to the city by the property's former owners.

Tonight at the city council meeting, councilmen will decide whether or not they'll use the money from their rainy day fund to move forward with the park.
