PONTOTOC COUNTY, OK -- Pontotoc County Red Cross members say this has been one of their busiest years ever, and they need volunteers more than ever. Tomorrow they'll be holding training classes at the Red Cross office in Ada so when the next disaster strikes they'll be ready.
"Without Red Cross it would be next to impossible," Director of Garvin County Emergency Management Services Bud Ramming said.
Ramming says it's been an extremely busy year for all those who save lives. He says they've dealt with almost all of it devastating snow and ice storms, tornados, and wildfires.
Ramming says if the Red Cross wasn't working hard, right by their side, he doesn't know how'd they'd get through.
Garvin and Pontotoc County Disaster Response Specialist Angielee Wright says she's been with the Red Cross for about 20 years. She says this year alone they've already helped thousands, even more than usual due to all the wildfires.
"We're not all fortunate enough to have a way to bounce back after a house fire. Not everyone has home insurance, and so the Red Cross is there to help people with lodging food and clothing after they lose their home in a disaster, such as a house fire," Wright said.
Red Cross volunteer Tommy Paul is known locally as one of the most dedicated volunteers. He says he's helped more people than he can count during his 10 years of serving, and says he can't think of a better way to give back.
"The rewards of helping, if you love to help people, the rewards is unreal. I mean, to see the people that appreciate it, and you know everybody does," Paul said.
The Red Cross will be holding two different training classes tomorrow at the Red Cross office in Ada. One is a Disaster Services Overview class from 9:00 a.m. till noon, and the other is a Shelter Operations course from 1:00 p.m. till 4:00 p.m.
They're encouraging anyone who's interested to attend the training courses. Wright says to contact her Monday night by 10:30 to register for these classes.
Wright says to call her on her at 405-323-2579.
The location of Tuesday's classes will be at the Pontotoc County Red Cross office, 704 North Oak, Suite 16, in Ada.
