(ANTLERS, OKLAHOMA) -- The Pushmataha hospital is undergoing some significant renovations. Administrators say the improvements will improve care, meet updated standards, and allow local patients to stay close to home for the treatment they need.

The Pushmataha hospital has been under new management for less than a year, but administrators say they're ready to bring changes to the hospital that will keep it up to speed with neighboring hospitals.

Martin Tucker is on the Pushmataha Hospital Board of Trustees and says, " the hospitals in the adjoining counties their operating suites have been renovated..brought up to current standards..ours here in antlers has not yet."

The renovations, which began Monday are a complete ceiling to floor reconstruction of two operating rooms. Enhancements will also include the latest surgical equipment, MRI technology and humidity controlled rooms. The final cost is undisclosed.

Pushmataha Hospital shares physicians and resources with Atoka County Medical Center. CEO Paul Reano says it's important that the hospital is up to par with their sister facility so the physicians can work consistently with the same equipment at both hospitals.

CEO Paul Reano, " we feel like if we don't get up to standards they're not gonna be comfortable doing surgery in our environment..and we want to make sure we meet the new standards required by the state and medicare."

President of the board of trustees Brent Franks says the renovations will also help foster community growth, "i'm really thankful for the hospital and i hope we continue to grow it and make it a better place for people to receive the medical attention they need."

A physical therapy program has also been added as part of the renovations.

Administrators say the renovations should be complete within 30 days.
