ARDMORE, OK -- Southern Oklahoma Technology Center's cosmetology students are getting creative and putting their skills to use to increase attention for Breast Cancer Awareness Month.

Today SOTC cosmetology students are all pinked out to kickoff the start of their big service project. About 30 cosmetology students are snipping away giving free haircuts to anyone throughout the whole month of October.

SOTC Cosmetology Instructor Ranae Barker says this is one of many service projects they are doing, but hopes this new great idea is a tradition they will continue throughout the years.

"They did the free haircuts for the whole month of October to help accommodate the community. It will benefit the community who can't afford to get haircuts, and it will also help the students get more practice," Barker said.

To some who are battling through something like cancer a haircut may be the least of their worries. That is why project leader Jonathan Oliver says it is nice to provide a service that will make someone feel better and may even relieve a little stress.

"It is very hard to find free haircuts. It makes you feel good to be able to give back to somebody who's not capable of doing some things for themselves," Oliver said.

David Delgado says he is excited about his free haircut and that not only are student's getting good experience, but he's happy to see them use their talent for a good cause.

"Her name's Kylie, this is her first haircut on a guy, and I'm kind of scared about that. No I'm just kidding," Delgado said.

Barker agrees this is an excellent way for her students to learn and put their scissors to the test. She says she is passionate about this event especially knowing first hand what it's like to battle cancer.

"It's wonderful I'm a cancer survivor so I think it's a really good beneficial thing to do," Barker said.

Haircuts are available by appointment Wednesday through Friday from 8 to 11 in the mornings, and 12:30 to 3:30 in the afternoons.

"It's great! Come on out for a free haircut," Delgado said.
