WASHINGTON -- A Sherman man has pleaded guilty to the 2009 killing of four soldiers and a Navy officer at a mental health clinic in Iraq.

Monday's plea from Sergeant John Russell means he'll avoid the death penalty.

Back in May of 2009 Russell went on a shooting spree at the Camp Liberty Combat Stress Center in Baghdad.

He told the military court at Joint Base Lewis-McChord in Washington state that he was in a "rage" when he opened fire and, in his words, "wanted the pain to stop."

Russell was on his third tour of Duty in Iraq.

He attended Tom Bean High school.

He now faces life in prison.
