SHERMAN, TX - Sherman police say a local tow truck driver has been arrested for illegally towing cars and they believe there may be more people who have fallen victim to this scam.

Sherman Police arrested 50 year old Rusty Sutherland, owner of Rusty's Towing service in Sherman at his place of business yesterday. He's been charged with auto theft.

"We know of two vehicles for sure that were towed by Rusty's Towing for other than legal justified reasons," said Sergeant Bruce Dawsey of the Sherman Police Department.

Sgt. Dawsey says they were tipped off by a woman who reported her car stolen, after having to leave it on the side of the road broken down.

"If it's towed by law enforcement we're gonna have a record of it. Investigation revealed that the vehicle was located inside of Rusty's Towing," Dawsey said.

Dawsey says they believe there could be more people who have been scammed by Sutherland.

"Anyone who's vehicle may have been towed for suspicious reasons outside of an accident, outside of an arrest or no insurance, but if they're vehicle stalled out, it was left on the side of the road, and it was towed by Rusty's Towing to contact the Sherman Police Department," Dawsey said.

We tried to contact Rusty's Towing but a woman who answered the phone said she had no comment.

If your vehicle was illegally towed by Rusty's Towing, Dawsey urges you to call the Sherman Police at 903-892-7290.
