BONHAM, TX-- It's summer break... But that's not stopping students from heading back to Bonham schools each afternoon... where a hot meal awaits them.

"I just think it's a good program. Especially for the kids that don't have anything else to do. They can ride their bikes up here, eat lunch, and have something nutritious," said Bonham ISD employee, Lori Flowers.

In the Bonham school district, 67 percent of students qualify for free and reduced lunches, and each year that number rises and more and more kids come to eat over the summer break.

"Families are in need. They do need for their children to have healthy meals," said Bonham ISD food services director, Phyllis Kinnaird.

Each afternoon, Monday through Friday, all summer long, kids 18 and under can eat free. No questions asked.

"It doesn't have to be in our district. They don't have to be on the free and reduced program. You don't have to sign up for it. We just want the kids to have a good hot meal, at least one a day," said Kinnaird.

"These students might not get another nutritious meal throughout the rest of the day," said Flowers.

Kids get to choose their main course and add a fruit, some vegetables, a salad and milk. For $3.25, adults can eat too. Kinnaird encourages every one to participate.

"We have a good staff here that would love to see the children. We like to talk to them and get to know them. We see them during the school year, we'd like to see them during the summer too," said Kinnaird.

Both Sherman ISD and Denison ISD serve breakfast and lunch all summer to kids 18 and under.
You do not have to be in the school district to get the free meal.
