BONHAM, TX-- Bonham police said they've arrested a man Tuesday afternoon, around 12:30, after a short foot race.

The suspect set a pile of trash on fire, inside the vacant Agriculture Research Building, on South Center Street.

When officers arrived on scene, the man was driving away. An officer pulled him over, then they say he took off on foot.

After a foot chase, of about four blocks, officers caught him.

Police recieved a call from a woman, who's a member of a neighborhood watch program. She said someone was illegally dumping trash at the Research Building.

Police said watch programs are a big help to police. The suspect is in custody.

"People are watching out. Not only for themselves, but for neighbors and things that are going on in their neighborhood. If it hadn't of been for them they would have gotten completely away and possibly the building could have been destroyed," Bankiston said.

Police have not released his name, they did say he is a 38-year-old male from Whitewright.
