SHERMAN, TX - The Texoma Council on Governments is helping local seniors protect themselves against medicare scammers.

The council hosted part one of a two-day seminar today aimed at educating seniors about those scams. It's part of a statewide program by the Texas Senior Medical Patrol.

Trish Jennings with the TCOG Area Agency on Aging says it's working. In fact, she's seen an increase in fraud awareness since their first seminar, which is good, since medicare recipients often targeted by scammers.

"There is some out there. You get phone calls and letters. I've had personal friends and family, parents of friends and family, that just had some horror stories."

TCOG plans to host another seminar in six months.
