DENISON, TX - Visitors to TMC Thursday learned ways to help bypass future heart complications at "Go Red With All Your Heart."
Nurse Lindsay Backschies said they conducted free screenings for blood-pressure, glucose and cholesterol. It's part of American Heart Month.
"Heart disease affects many people and causes a lot of other problems," she said. "You want to make sure that you're educated on ways to be healthier."
TMC also set up booths educating attendees on healthy diets and lifestyles.
Chef Robert Aranson demonstrated how to cook a heart-healthy chicken tortilla soup.
"It is very heart-healthy, very high in protein and very low in saturated fat," he said.
Heart-healthy meals include vegetables, legumes, low fat meat, chicken and other poultry, he said.
Scottie Gainey, Administrative Director of Cardiovascular Services, said TMC wants to make sure people constantly stay in-tune with their heart health.
"More or less encourage them to be aware of heart disease," he said. "To set up appointments with physicians, their family doctors, just to make sure that they are aware of the risk factors."
