GRAYSON COUNTY, TX - With super Tuesday over the eyes of Texas are on it's newly set primary. Grayson County voters will soon be getting their voter registration cards in the mail. KXII talked to local officials about how the delayed primary will affect voters, and what they can expect leading up to the election.
For now, the battle is over.
"We are just thrilled in the elections department to have an election date, May 29 2012," said Deana Patterson, Grayson County Elections Clerk.
Patterson says waiting for lawmakers to announce a primary date has been stressful for everyone.
"We will prepare for this election as we always prepare for elections," she said, "and now that we have an exact date we can get the plans made"
A federal court in San Antonio has ordered Texas to hold it's primary elections on May 29th resolving for now legal disputes over new House and Congressional district maps that have been tying up the election process.
"In the south part of Texas they had to completely redraw some voter lines," said John Ramsey, Grayson County Tax Assessor, "and that's what's created this federal lawsuit that we've been dealing with since before Christmas."
Until now, the county has not been allowed to send out voter registration cards, but Ramsey says the cards for all 75,000 registered voters in the county will be in the mail by or before the April 25th deadline.
"We still have some time to get them out," Ramsey said. "We'll be much quicker than that in Grayson County."
Ramsey says if you have recently moved into the county, changed address or last name, or just aren't registered to vote, you have until April 12th to register.
"If you are registered and you've kept your address current in your current county then you're still registered," he said, "it's just your certificate that's ran out of date."
Due to population growth, additional early voting sites will be set up throughout the county. Those locations will soon be listed on the county's website. For election information you can go to the Grayson County website http://www.co.grayson.tx.us/
