BOWIE, TEXAS -- The National Weather Service says a tornado touched down in Montague County Wednesday evening.

On Thursday, many construction workers and community members were in Bowie to help clean up some of the areas hit hardest by the storm.

This EF-1 tornado hit Montague County just before 6 o'clock Wednesday evening, with winds reaching 100 miles per hour.

By morning, community members could see the damage left behind across town, some of the most extensive at Bowie Country Club.

"I suffered a loss when I saw it," Bowie Country Club owner Greg Underwood said.

Underwood's dad built this club and golf course in the 1960s. It took the twister a matter of minutes to nearly destroy the clubhouse.

"The weather is just part of our existence here. We have to be prepared. We don't want to be foolish about it. These storms are very forceful and powerful," Underwood said.

The Texoma chapter of the Red Cross dispatched volunteers, like Keith Blankenship, hours after the storm hit.

"It was pitch dark and just you couldn't see anything," Blankenship said.

"Food, clothing and shelter are what we try to provide immediately, but we'll also have some tarps because of storm damage, you know, whatever is most helpful to them right there," Texoma Red Cross chapter Executive Director Jim Durham said.

The Red Cross continues to hand out supplies and provide assistance to victims.

In the interim, Underwood says he's devastated by the damage, but is confident he can overcome it.

"And so I'm used to taking hits, taking lumps, it's something we all have to be prepared to do," Underwood said.

The Bowie County Club had a golf tournament planned this Saturday. They say they'll go on with the tournament, despite the damage.
