PAULS VALLEY, OK - State troopers in Oklahoma are investigating a Garvin County shooting that involved one of their own over the weekend.

The Oklahoma Highway Patrol said the shooting left one man, later identified as 41-year-old Ray Kent Puckett, dead. It happened around 2:30 p.m. Sunday, just northeast of Pauls Valley on a County Road.

OHP said Trooper Danny Long, who had just come on duty, noticed a man inside a pickup with a shotgun and turned around to follow the driver. OHP said after a mile long pursuit Puckett got out with a 12-gauge shotgun then pointed it at Long. A spokesperson for OHP said that is when Long fired at the Puckett, killing him.

"Unfortunately he did lose his life yesterday afternoon and we are still investigating exactly what was going on that caused him to do the things he did yesterday," OHP Public Affairs Trooper Betsy Randolph said. "It was a terribly unfortunate event for everyone involved but we are thankful none of our troopers were injured."

Long has been with OHP for twelve years. He is currently on routine administrative leave.
