Just because your child is in a car seat, doesn't necessarily mean he or she is safe.

That's the message of TxDOT's "Save me with a seat" campaign. The campaign looks to raise awareness of proper car seat usage.

The campaign is part of the national "Child Passenger Safety Week."

TxDOT hosted a car seat checkpoint in Cooke County Wednesday. EMS, TxDOT and DPS officials were on-hand to show parents the proper way to install a car seat.

Patsy Walls, TxDOT traffic safety coordinator, said it's important for parents to make sure they have the right seat for their child. Finding the right seat depends on the child's weight and the size.

Parents who showed up today were also shown how to properly fit the seat to their car.

TxDOT had car seats available to give to parents who did not have the correct seat for their child.

Walls said the seats were provided through a federal grant TxDOT received.

She said 75 percent of car seats are not properly installed. It's the number-one killer of children age four to 14, she said.

"We see a lot of misuse. Many times we go in and there's this beautiful child seating in the car seat and their parents think they're buckled up correctly," she said.

The campaign wraps up this Saturday with "National Seat Check Saturday." Walls said TxDOT will host free car seat inspections across the state.
