Aerobatics Championship underway in Denison

DENISON, TX -- More than 100 pilots are taking to the sky in Denison for the week, competing in the U.S. National Aerobatics Championship.

The competition kicked off Sunday at the North Texas Regional Airport. Pilots will be judged on their technique of different tricks and those who succeed in the competition will represent the U.S. in the World Championship.

The competition will go on all week long and the public can always come out to watch the action. On Friday, there will be a freestyle event or air show. The planes will be at a lower altitude, for better viewing.

"It's very highly technical flight sequence, very complicated maneuvers. The judges are grading on the accuracy of the lines, if we're vertical, if we're off a little bit, if the rolls stop on axis or if they go over and back, lots of deductions for the quality of the maneuvers," contest director Aaron McCartan said.

The freestyle event will begin at 10 a.m. Friday.
