LOVE COUNTY, Okla. ―A Love County family is tapping into a completely natural, alternative power source. They have installed what the family and the distributor call the very first residential wind turbine in southern Oklahoma, and Tuesday was the generator’s first day in use.
It's about as tall as a flag pole and makes virtually no sound. It is spinning away, providing the Yearby family with free energy.
“It's been constantly running. As long as that thing is turning, we get a constant flow of energy,” says Justin Yearby, who had a wind turbine installed Monday.
“This is taking wind, turning a generator, producing electricity, the electricity is coming here, and he’s using it inside his house,” Roger Jeffcoats from Skystream Distributor says.
Yearby said he's proud to have the first of its kind in southern Oklahoma, and he is he excited to be using clean energy and to be saving money. He said he’s already seen a difference on his energy costs.
“The money saving, with the wind generation is anywhere from 40 to 80% depending. The average saving is going to be right at 60 %,” Jeffcoats says.
That translates to cash in Justin Yearby's pocket.
“I'm looking to save a couple hundred dollars a month.”
And the distributors say others could benefit, too.
“We do have wind constantly. We are in a great area. As the wind is blowing it’s free. Some people have said Oklahoma is the ‘Saudi Arabia of wind power’”, Jeremia Abrego of Skystream Distributor says.
Distributors say the wind turbines need just an 8 mile an hour wind to begin turning and peak with about 29 mile per hour winds, but the devices themselves can withstand winds up to 140 miles per hour.
