Ragweed blooms in Texoma

Ragweed season is one of the most dreaded times of the year for allergy sufferers.

Allergist Vern Laing says ragweed started blooming about a week ago and will continue blooming through the middle of October.

Laing says we have what's called 'giant ragweed' here in Texoma, which can grow to heights of 6 feet or greater. Since the pollen is basically invisible to the naked eye, Laing says it can be hard to tell if that's what's causing the sneezing, sniffling, and watery or itchy eyes.

But there are some things you can do if ragweed is making you miserable.

"The best thing to do is stay in the air conditioning indoors. If you're headed outside, you may be more affected by it."

If you are susceptible to ragweed, Dr. Laing suggests wearing a mask. He also says the old standby, Benadryl, can sometimes provide relief.
