TMC goes smoke free

DENISON, Tex. ― Thursday was the Great American Smoke Out. Texoma Medical Center, along with other hospitals nationwide, is going smoke free and encouraging people to kick the habit.

Officials say starting Thursday smoking will no longer be allowed on the campus. They say they are hoping to stop tobacco use among employees, patients, and hospital visitors.

One employee says they were notified in July that the change was coming, and she says it is a good thing for the hospital.

"It came down from our management council, and they thought it would be a good idea for us to implement this. Many other hospitals in the area have already done so, and we thought it would be a good idea to implement it on National Smoke Out Day, and it’s going pretty well," infection prevention nurse Karen McCoy said.

McCoy also says the smoking huts where many people used to smoke have been auctioned off to the employees.
