Bonham, TX - The event was called “Red Dirt - Pink Shirt” and the cause was helping out a local mom with cancer. It was held today at the Legacy Ridge Country Club in Bonham to support 27 year old Courtney Dempsey-Hill.

She is a mother of four children and says her family has provided the strength she’s needed during this tough time. About a month ago doctors told Dempsey-Hill that she had two baseball size tumors on her thyroid in her neck.

The tumors were removed over a week ago, leaving a scar with staples across her collar bone. She wasn’t able to get Medicaid until recently, after her medical bills had already started accumulating.

She says her doctors at Texoma Medical Center Dr. Oro and Dr. Call have helped tremendously. They even did the initial biopsy on her tumors for free.

But it was her younger brother Chris Dempsey that organized today’s benefit. The proceeds will go to help her pay for medical expenses and bills. Dempsey-Hill says she is grateful for everyone’s help and support.

“Very thankful, real blessed, didn't realize that all this could happen just for little old me."

There were 10 bands from across Texas that played at “Red Dirt – Pink Shirt,” along with a fun filled auction and T-shirts for sale. The benefit cost $10 to get in.

With so many people from the community coming out to show their support, Chris has decided to hold the event annually to help someone else in need.
