DENISON, TX - It's been years in the making and under construction for the past 18 months. On Wednesday the new Texoma Medical Center is now open. State, County and local lawmakers joined with TMC officials to cut the ribbon, officially opening the facility Wednesday afternoon.
Hundreds of people braved the freezing temperatures to attend the ceremony and ribbon cutting. And from 3:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m. they were in and out of the new hospital taking tours and getting an up close look at the state of the art facilities.
"This is a step in health care that takes a millennium to arrive at a day like this and we're here,” said Mackey Watkins, CEO of TMC.
The mood was excited and the occasion historic with the grand opening of the new TMC.
"This is a dream come true, it’s something we’ve been looking forward to. It exceeds all of our expectations and we are really excited,” said Jerdy Gary, Chairman of TMC.
Just 18 months after construction began the momentous project is finally complete. It’s a feat that Universal Health Services, Inc. finished faster than the board members thought possible.
"We are so proud to be connected with them, be part of their family, because they stepped in here and said we’ll build you a state of the art hospital and we’ll do it in three years," said Gary.
With new equipment and technology, not to mention a beautiful design to give a warm and healing atmosphere, the doctors, nurses and patients will enjoy the new TMC the most.
"Tremendous benefit to not only our medical staff, employees all of our staff that work here but most importantly to our patients who live in the four county area," said Watkins.
CEO Mackey Watkins feels the new hospital provides more than just a new building.
"One doctor said ‘I’m almost giddy after I go through there because it’s just so awesome.’ And so I think that the entire morale, attitude, everything positive about a work environment is going to be incredibly improved just because of the setting," said Watkins.
The new hospital not only means better patient care, but also new business in Denison and surrounding areas. And additional jobs will also be created along with transferring all current employees to the new hospital.
The big patient move will be in two and a half weeks on December 27th from the old TMC to the new one. And at that time they’ll officially start seeing patients and taking care of Texoma’s residents.
