October 21-27 is School Bus Safety Week. It's a time to remember that we all need to pay attention to school buses, slow down in school zones, and stop when a bus is picking up or dropping off kids. It's the law.
According to the Texas Department of Public Safety, the most dangerous part of their journey to and from school is crossing the street to board or de-board the bus. "Drivers should not proceed until the bus resumes motion; the driver is signaled by the bus driver to proceed, or the visual signal is no longer activated."
DPS also says that school buses remain one of the safest modes of transportation in Texas. 38,000 buses transport 1.5 million kids every day. DPS says school buses account for less than one-half of one percent of all Texas roadway crashes.
This year's theme for School Bus Safety Week is "Stop on Red, Kids Ahead."
