Mmm. It's just about time to pop that turkey into the oven. But many people will be using something else to cook up that big beautiful bird -- a turkey fryer! Personal experience is lacking here, but from what I've heard, a turkey fryer can cook up one mean bird.
Problem is, a turkey fryer can be a mean contraption to deal with. So that's why it's really important to take every precaution you can to avoid injury to yourself or others.
The first thing is to select a UL listed turkey fryer. Sherman Fire Chief Jeff Jones says, "It's an untraditional way of cooking [a turkey], but it produces good results."
Fryers, once they get going, will be extremely hot and will remain that way for quite a while after use, too. Be careful to make sure your fryer is out in the open and sits on a flat surface. With the hot oil inside, fryers have the chance to tip over as well.
