SHERMAN, TX -- The Sherman Police Department is helping you be aware of how to make sure you don't become a victim during the holidays. You can follow several simple steps to guard against people who want to take your good name.
"It's one of the fastest growing crimes," Sgt. Bruce Dawsey said about identity theft.
"Try and avoid shopping with every credit card that [you] have and never carry your social security card," Sgt. Dawsey said.
Identity theft is classified as a crime in which someone takes your personal information and uses it in a way that involved fraud. That's according to the United States Department of Justice.
It's especially important this time of year to take measures in order to avoid any possible ID theft. Shoppers are out in greater numbers, and so are potential thieves.
